How to apply flat back crystals

Here is how to apply flat back crystals to your home decor items and give them a pop of light and sparkle.

You know what takes your painted pottery or home décor projects from “cute” to OMG where did you get that? — flat back crystals!  Whether you’re working on a flower pot, a picture frame, a tray, or even a wall plaque, adding a few sparkling crystals can instantly elevate your piece and give it that luxe, artful vibe. It’s like giving your art its own jewelry!

Crystals catch the light, add texture, and bring movement and magic to your work. They’re perfect for highlighting details, creating patterns, or just giving your project that extra wow factor. And the best part? You can use them as a form of self-expression. Choose colors that match your mood, your room, or your story. I keep them on hand in my tudio to add a bit of magic when I can.

Don’t overthink it—just start with one or two accents and see where the sparkle takes you. Trust me, once you see how those little gems shine, you’ll want to bedazzle everything in sight. So go ahead, add some bling to your brilliance—your creativity deserves to shine just as bright as you do!

How to apply:

pinata pottery piece
This is a pottery piece I glazed and fired, now it needs some sparkle!

Clean the surface

Make sure it’s dry and free of dust, oil, or debris. Use rubbing alcohol to prep.

Prep the crystals

I put them on a flat surface I can move, like a paper plate or thelid of a tin. It makes it easy to pic them up because you can shake it and they will bounce right side up.

Apply the adhesive

Use a toothpick to place a tiny amount of glue on the hard surface or directly on the back of the crystal.

Use a wax pencil or picker tool to position the crystal. Press down gently.

Let it cure

Allow it to dry completely. Most strong glues need 24 hours to cure fully.

Non-porous surfaces like plastic, metal, or glass, E6000 works great.

Porous or flexible surfaces, try Gem-Tac.

Don’t overload the glue—you only need a dab.

Work in small sections if you’re covering a large area.

When it comes to adding flat back crystals to your home décor or painted pottery, not all crystals are created equal!

Let’s break it down so you can choose the perfect bling for your masterpiece.

Glass vs. acrylic vs. resin flat back crystals

Glass crystals

These are your premium pick! They’re cut from real glass and often have multiple facets that reflect light beautifully. Think of brands like Swarovski or Preciosa—super sparkly, high quality, and durable. They’re perfect when you want your piece to really pop. If you want to elevate a gift, a gallery piece, or a special item, glass crystals are the way to go.

Acrylic crystals

Lightweight and budget-friendly! Acrylic crystals are made from plastic and usually have a smooth, shiny surface. They’re great for larger projects or items that don’t need that ultra-fancy sparkle. These are perfect for kids’ crafts, beginner projects, or things you want to cover in bulk. Just keep in mind—they don’t shine quite like glass.

Resin crystals
These fall somewhere in between! Resin can mimic the look of glass but is more flexible and lightweight. They can be a great alternative when you want more sparkle than acrylic without the cost of glass. However, some resin crystals may yellow over time if exposed to sunlight.

Round vs. Multifaceted

Round (single-facet or cabochon-style)
These crystals are usually smooth and have a dome-like surface. They give a softer shine and are often used for a subtle, elegant look. Great for filling in small areas or layering with other shapes.

Multifaceted
These are the showstoppers! Multifaceted crystals have tons of little angles that catch and reflect light like crazy. They’re ideal for when you want your piece to glimmer from across the room. Perfect for accent points or creating movement in your design.

Keep in mind there are also lots of different shapes for flat back crystals. I really only stick with glass flat back crystals, multi-faceted because they look the best!
