Wood-framed prints by Crafty Chica #craftychica #latinxart

This was a project I made in 2020 when all of us were at home with more time to spend on crafting and such.  I had a stack of these that I bought a year earlier and every time I walked through the garage I felt like they looked at me, eagerly, waiting to be transformed.

I finally brought them in my studio!

I had a friend ask me to share the process so here it is!

Supplies:

Blank wood frames

Sandpaper

Craft paints

Brushes

Cup of water to rinse your brushes

Gloss sealer. You can use spray or brush-on.

Directions:

Prep your space: Cover your work area with butcher paper or a drop cloth. Set up a drying station using cooling racks, empty boxes, or cups to elevate the frames as they dry.

Clean the frames: Wipe each frame with a damp cloth to remove any dust or debris. If they have glass inserts, remove those before painting.

Base coat: Line up all 12 frames and choose 2–3 main colors of craft paint for variety. Using a wide flat brush or sponge brush, apply a base coat to all the frames, working in batches by color. Let dry completely or use a heat tool to speed it up.

Add accents: Once dry, go in with detail brushes, stencils, or paint pens to add designs like dots, stripes, florals, lettering, or metallic accents. Mix and match finishes like matte and metallic for contrast.

Embellishments (optional): Add decorative touches like glued-on rhinestones, small wood cutouts, stickers, or decoupage paper pieces. Keep them lightweight so they don’t interfere with hanging or standing.

Seal: Once all the paint and embellishments are dry, apply a clear sealer (matte, satin, or glossy) using a brush or spray, depending on your preference. Allow to dry completely before assembling or using.
