Washi tape craft: Photo mats
Do you want to know a secret to a very eye pleasing technique? Repetitive patterns! In this case, it is repetitive tape. We are using all different patterns and colors and thicknesses of washi tape and lining them all up together to create a beautiful aesthetic.
Here is my video tutorial for washi tape frames
If you happen to have a huge stash of washi tape like I do, this is a beautiful and efficient way to put those rolls to good use. And all you need is a photo mat! You can visit a dollar store or a thrift store or use frames you already have and buy the mat separate.
The technique in this is simply placing the washy tape down in rows. But let me give you a more complete tutorial!
Supplies for this photo mat washi tape craft
Photo mat in your choice of size, make sure it fits inside a frame.
Assorted rolls of washing tape. They can be different thicknesses colors and patterns. Or if you prefer, you can stay in the same color story, it is totally up to you!
A ruler or straight edge tool.
Directions for a washi tape photo mat:
Carefully remove the mat from the photo frame. Set the photo frame and glass aside.

Use a ruler and a pencil to draw a very faint line at each corner diagonally from the outside to the inside. It should look like a mitered corner.

Set out your washing tapes and choose which ones you want to sit down. Apply each tape row by row, let it hang over the pencil drawn edge just a tiny bit. Mix and match the sizes and colors.

Once you have one side finish, set a ruler on the mitered edge and use your craft knife to cut away the excess tape on both side.

Turn your mat around and complete the next side in the same way. Continue until all four sides are covered with different stripes of the washi tape.

Once you are all finished, make sure there are no excess edges hanging out. Re-assemble your frame. Put the photo mat face down after you sit in the glass. And then place your picture inside the hole of the photo mat.

This is such a great way to show off your artwork, a postcard, or just anything simple. You can do this with any size of photo mat. If you do not have one, you can make one with card stock by simply cutting out a shape in the center.
